Microsoft continues to restrict how you install Windows 11, steadily removing ways to set up the operating system without a Microsoft account.

Since Windows 11 version 22H2 arrived in February 2023, both Home and Pro users have needed an internet connection and a Microsoft account to finish setup. And for a time, you could cleverly sidestep this by opening the command prompt during installation and entering bypassnro. However, Microsoft recently announced this workaround will soon vanish in a beta build of Windows 11.

We’re removing the bypassnro.cmd script from the build to enhance security and user experience of Windows 11. This change ensures that all users exit setup with internet connectivity and a Microsoft Account. – Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26200.5516 (Dev Channel)

Does it need to be said? Removing the local account option deepens Microsoft's data collection. It's also a way to push more people into their paid services.

Using an offline account is eliminating one attack vector. You reduce some vulnerabilities associated with cloud storage and remote access. And forcing an online account during setup is unnecessary to those who don't want it. (That's my preference on Windows and Linux. Admittedly, the integration on macOS is nice.)

There have been various methods to avoid creating or signing into a Microsoft account during Windows setup, but Microsoft is systematically eliminating these options. Eric Parker has some great tips on how to workaround this.

Creating a local account, especially on Windows Home editions, has become progressively harder. This persistent effort to funnel users into Microsoft accounts has public complaints from even the likes of Elon Musk.

While Google and Apple encourage you to sign in, Microsoft forces your hand.

Microsoft's pushiness remains unique; there's definitely a difference between a company that would really prefer that you sign in and one that forces you to. – Andrew Cunningham

There is a clear difference between suggesting an online account and mandating one.
